The Maleny Community Precinct (MCP) is another step closer to becoming a reality following council’s decision to take the first steps in the master planning process for the site that will determine the viability of the project.
Council’s decision to prepare the brief guiding the master plan goes hand in hand with the preparation of a governance model to guide the financial and land management of the precinct and includes a detailed business plan.
The MCP ‘greenfield’ site east of the Maleny Town Centre was identified by the state government’s SEQ Regional Plan in 2005 and requires local council planning to guide its development.
Local Division 5 Councillor, Jenny McKay said today’s decision builds on the concept planning done by the former Caloundra City Council.
“The MCP concept plan, approved by the former Caloundra City Council has been reviewed to make sure it ticks all the boxes to meet social, environmental and economic needs and has the support necessary to succeed,” Cr McKay said.
“As a result we are doubly sure the facilities proposed align with community objectives.
“These include a community golf course, a hinterland park and garden including restored wetlands, walking trails, the restoration of Pattimore House, an environment and landcare facility, sports and recreation facilities and residential use areas.
“This makes the next step very exciting because only by moving from concepts to real planning details do we know what is physically and financially possible on the site.
Cr McKay said key stakeholders advised planning the Precinct’s good management as important as good land use planning and critical to success.
“Precinct resources will have to be shared to achieve Maleny’s vision for active living and community networks, making a management plan that clearly outlines the business, management and financial responsibilities essential,” Cr McKay said.
Cr McKay said all stakeholders were keen to move ahead.
“While all the plans are being prepared, I hope to soon see Barung Landcare settle in their new home, the planning for Pattemore House begin and golf driving range on the site as an interim activity indicating there are more good things to come.”
The master planning of the site will be out sourced to a multi-disciplinary team of professionals to finalise the site details for the activities and residential proposals.
At the same time key stakeholders and Council will prepare a suitable governance framework and financial and land management models to ensure the viability and success for the project.
